The blessing of Anglican worship is that we declare the gospel each time we meet. But the danger is that we can do it like we are reading Ikea plans for a bookshelf. Sixteen-year-old Isaac Watts complained about this to his father one day, who then challenged him to write hymns that touch people’s hearts.
In his lifetime Watts wrote over 750 hymns, including some of the best known in Christian history:
- “When I survey the wondrous cross,”
- “O God our help in ages past,” and
- “Jesus shall reign where’er the sun.”
Watts famously said “To see the dull indifference, the neglect and thoughtless air that sits upon the faces of a whole assembly, while the psalm is upon their lips, might even tempt a charitable observer to suspect the fervency of their inward religion.”
This Advent in our Sunday Adult Forum, The Rev. Chuck Collins will be considering the devotional and theological content of three of the most beloved Advent Hymns in our Anglican tradition. All are Welcome. We start at 9:30; come as early as 9:15 for fellowship and coffee.

December 17 – “Blessed be the King whose coming”
