Journey to Bethlehem Day 6

Friday, December 6 Matthew 24:29-35

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Let’s be honest. None of us woke up this morning hoping that today the sun would be darkened, or the moon would not give its light, or the stars would fall from heaven. In fact, usually on days we don’t see the sun, rainy or not, we consider the day dreary, don’t we? We’ve been conditioned to believe that a day without sunshine is a crummy day, so we look forward to sunshiny days.
But what if you were told that a day without sunshine – when the sun is darkened – would mean that evil is conquered, there is no more pain, no more tears, no more illness or despair, no more death, no more mourning – now that would be a day to look forward to, a day that you would want to embrace.
Thanks be to God, for that is His promise. When Jesus comes again, He will conquer all evil, all darkness, all things that cause us pain. It will be a beautiful day to behold. The rulers of evil will mourn on that day, but we will be rejoicing as the promised day when the sun will be darkened will have finally come and Jesus will reign in His power and might. On that day there will be no need of sun or moon to shine, for the glory of God will be our light, and the lamp is the Lamb (Revelation 21:23).

Heavenly Father help us not to hold fast to empty promises of this world – even days filled with sunshine – but let us look forward to the coming of our Savior with great expectation and joyful hope in the fulfillment of all Your promises. And in so doing, may we honor Christ our King!
