Over the millennia of human history, writers and biblical scholars have produced libraries of books on the New Testament Gospels, making them among the most written-about books of all time. Since the Gospels are all about Jesus, this makes Jesus the most written-about man in history. Of course, given that Jesus is the Son of God, it is only “right and meet” that this should be so!
There are four Gospels in the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
It is generally understood that Mark was not written by an eyewitness to Jesus’s first-century ministry, but by someone who was a close companion of Peter, who, of course, was an eyewitness. In fact, some consider Mark to be Peter’s Gospel.
Luke was also written by someone who was not an eyewitness to Jesus’s ministry. Luke was a Gentile traveling companion of Paul—the Pharisee-turned-disciple who wrote the most New Testament books (in the form of letters). Luke is often regarded as the most historically detailed of the Gospel writers.
John was written many years after the earthly ministry of Jesus that John himself witnessed. Those years gave John the perspective to write one of the most compelling and magisterial Gospels of them all: “In the beginning was the Word.”
That leaves Matthew’s Gospel—an account of Jesus’s life and ministry that invites comparison with Luke’s historical accounts of both Jesus and the Church in Acts. But where Luke wrote from a Gentile perspective, Matthew wrote from a Jewish one—from the perspective of an Israelite. Matthew, like Paul, was a Jew whose encounter with the Messiah changed his life, and then he wrote about it.
